Statewide Awareness Training on Serving Deaf and Hard of Hearing Individuals

The purpose of this training is to promote making all public services more friendly to deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Participants will learn about the unique culture and perspectives of the Deaf community, means to communicate or interact with individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, identify additional communication technologies and applications to enhance communication accessibility, appropriately determine effective communication strategies and ways to effectively match individuals with varying hearing loss with a variety of communication methods, and recognize and implement reasonable accommodations for employee success and customer access. Additional resources will include provisions of telecommunication relay services, interpreter services, state programs assisting deaf and hard of
hearing, to name a few. The training will be led by a team of three presenters who are themselves deaf or hard of hearing and vary in their communication modes.
